Recent research has shown that there are differences in how well each of these product designs works and that generally women prefer some to others (54 Fader et al 2008).
Most women in this study reported that they preferred disposable 'pull-up' style pants for use during the day or night.
All-in-one, diaper-style pads were the least likely to leak but women generally did not find them acceptable and preferred an 'insert' style pad or pant.
However, disposable pants tend to cost more than other styles, and so using a combination of more expensive pants when the look of the product and discreetness are your priority and cheaper alternatives at other times may work best for you. Click on the pictures below for more information about the different pad styles.
Products for moderate/heavy leakage are frequently used in care homes for people who require more intensive help. The performance of these products has also been evaluated recently in this environment (54 Fader 2008).
When choosing one (or more) pad designs to try, you will need to consider a range of factors including frequency and severity of leakage, whether the product is for day or night time leakage, how easily you can change the pad and your personal preferences and lifestyle.
